Painting of HMS Eurydice under salvage by Charles Robert Ricketts, 1882. Oil on canvas (original artwork dimensions 76x127cm [30x50in] in gilt frame 106.5x157.5x11.5cm [42x62x4.5in]). Signed and dated blc, C.R. Ricketts. - A commemorative study; information on metal plate on frame reads HMS Eurydice. Sunk off the Isle of Wight on the 24 March 1878 with the loss of 300 lives (mostly young sailors). The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) arriving in his yacht 'Aline' to witness the salvage operations, in which Siebe, Gorman & Co. assisted. Other shipping in area. The salvage tug 'Camel' is working, divers descending to the wreck in shallows foreground.
