Description
Painting, one of a pair, entitled 'North Eastern coalfield: colliery pit-head and coking ovens' by W. Wheldon, 1845. Oil on canvas, octagonal, (Original artwork dimensions; image 28 x 46 cm in frame 45x63x4cm). Each painting shows a colliery pit head with associated coking ovens on the Northumberland and Durham coal field. This one also shows surface activity by the pit-head gear and buildings, wagons and pit ponies in the yard. To left, Hackworth locomotive and coking ovens. Similar to scene of Whitworth Park colliery in: 'A series of views of the collieries of Northumberland and Durham' by TH Hair, 1844.
