Description
Poster produced for Southern Railway (SR) to promote services between London Victoria and Brighton on the ‘Brighton Belle’ all pullman electric train, a journey that took one hour. A timetable is printed beneath the central lightning bolt. The lightning bolt and lettering were intended to convey the ideas of speed and modernity. Artwork by Charles ‘Shep’ Shepherd, who studied art under Paul Woodroffe and was head of the studio at the Baynard Press. He designed posters for the Royal Mail Packet Steam Company and London Transport as well as SR.
