London Laughs - Stephenson's Rocket, Science Museum', illustration. Two schoolboys at the Science Museum inspecting the Rocket designed and built in 1829 by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859). The Rocket took part in and subsequently won the 'Rainhill Trials', a competition set up to find the most suitable locomotive for haulage on the Liverpool and Manchester railway.
