Engraving by Henry Roberts made about 1761and based on an earlier scale drawing by Jaaziell Johnston. Designed by Henry Winstanley (1644-1703) and completed between 1696 and 1699, this was the first lighthouse to be built on Eddystone Rocks. Situated 14 miles off the coast of Plymouth in Devon, Eddystone Rocks are the location of the most famous lighthouse in Britain. A storm on the night of 26 November 1703 destroyed Winstanley's lighthouse, killing the light-keepers, the workmen and Winstanley himself.
