Colour engraving by Josiah Wood Whymper taken from 'Phenomena of Nature', published in London in 1849 for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. 'Icebergs, or ice mountains, are enormous mases of ice formed in the polar regions which can be transported by currents to very considerable distances from the places where they were formed. Their bases are usually much larger in extent than their upper surfaces, and the proportion of ice appearing above water is seldom les in elevation than one-seventh of the whole thicknes.'
