Description
One of a set of teaching cards published by James Reynolds & Sons, London, England around 1860. Titled 'The Sun and Solar Phenomena', the chart was drawn and engraved by John Emslie. The astronomical diagram shows the Sun's appearance if projected through a telescope onto a white card. Other illustrations outline the form of dark areas called sunspots and those lighter ones known as faculae. The inset sketches at the bottom illustrate the appearance of a solar eclipse and other atmospheric phenomena.
