Description
Engraving by P Roberts showing a ship in distres in heavy seas, with men using a kite at the top of a cliff. George Pocock believed that kites could be used at sea as auxiliary sails, and for dropping anchor in the case of a shipwreck. Illustration from Pocock's 'Treatise on the aeropleustic Art, or Navigation in the Air', (London, 1827).
