The robot pit contains the only permanent display in the world of collective robot behaviour. By means of a joystick a robot can be controlled to pursue or be pursued by another robot. A robot can also be led in a synchronised dance or be the leader with the other robots snaking after it. Like bats, the robots use ultrasonic sensors to detect objects and communicate with each other using infra red signals. These robots were animated by the Department of Cybernetics at the University of Reading.
