Description
The Great Western Railway (GWR) abandoned the broad gauge system in 1892 and several miles of sidings were laid at Swindon. 130 of the 195 locomotives taken out of service were convertable and re-entered service as standard gauge engines. This sort of mas gathering of locomotives for scrapping was not seen again until the withdrawal of British Railways' (BR) steam locomotive fleet in the 1960s. Photograph by GWR staff photographer.
