British soldiers preparing to fire a 15 inch Howitzer, Battle of Albert, 1 July 1916. The battle of Albert was one of the first operations of the Battle of the Somme. The Somme began on 1 July 1916 and during the first day there were 60,000 casualties, 20,000 of whom were killed, making it the bloodiest day in battle ever. The total casualties for the whole battle were an estimated 1.2 million.
