This brain scanner from Atkinson Morley's Hospital in Wimbledon was one of the first ever made, and the experimental model with which the earliest trials on patients were undertaken. Techniques developed with this machine established computed tomography (CT scanning) as a key tool for studying the brain. CT scanning is a method which produces an image of a 'slice' of the body, using a computer program to reconstruct a picture from data derived from a series of precision X-ray exposures.
