LNER steam locomotive No 6173, March railway marshalling yard, 1938. London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) S-1/1 steam 0-8-4T steam locomotive No 6173 on top of the 'hump' in 1938. The locomotive was built in 1908 by Beyer, Peacock of Manchester for the Great Central Railway. Wagons were shunted to the top of the sloping 'hump' and then were left to run down the gradient under the force of gravity, channelled by points, to join the appropriate freight trains.
