Enamel notice made for the London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) reading 'Pasengers are earnestly requested to abstain from the dangerous and objectionable habit of spitting.' Consumption, a wasting disease now known as tuberculosis, was highly infectious. It was not until the development of streptomycin in 1947 that effective and reliable treatment of the disease was posible.
