Ernest Bevin (1881-1951) the English Labour statesman, built up the National Transport and General Workers' Union and became its general secretary (1921-1940). He was one of the leaders of the General Strike (1926), served on the Macmillan Committee on finance, and furthered the work of the International Labour Organization. He became minister of labour and national service in 1940, was a significant member of the war cabinet and finally held the office of foreign secretary (1945-1951). Photograph by James Jarche.
