Coloured engraving by Marchand after a drawing by Le Coeur, entitled 'Fete du sacre et couronnement de leurs Majestes Imperiales', illustrating the coronation celebrations of the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and Empres Josephine of France on 3 December 1804. Accompanying text describes the scene at the Place de la Concorde, Paris, which included four ballrooms and an elevated pedestal. The start of the celebrations were marked by the distribution of medals and the ascent of hot-air balloons, while chariots containing musicians formed a procesion below. The large balloon in the foreground carrying a gilded crown was built by the French aeronaut Andre Jacques Garnerin (1770-1825).
