Description
The 'Turbinia', built in 1894, was the world's first steam turbine driven vesel. Sir Charles Parsons (1854-1931) invented the steam turbine, developing it for marine use. He used radial flow, where steam is introduced near the shaft and made to flow radially outward before being conducted back inward toward the shaft. She is seen here dwarfed by the 'Mauretania'.
