Description
Engraving from the 'Illustrated London News'. The furnace is of the simplest form with a smelting chimney about six feet high. The iron ore is poured in to the smelting chimney from the top with charcoal while workers around the base of the chimney fan the fire with bellows. The earliest evidence of iron-making in India dates from around 1000 BC.
