Description
Photograph of Wallis with a model of a swing-wing aircraft. Barnes Wallis (1887-1979) was the inventor of the bouncing bomb. He designed the R100 airship for Vickers, and went on to produce aircraft designs which combined lightnes with strength, applying these qualities to the 'Wellesley' and 'Wellington' bombers. With the succes of his bouncing bomb, Wallis was allowed by the authorities to produce heavy, penetration bombs, the 'Tallboy' and 'Grand Slam'.
