Arthur C Clarke with family group, c 1929. Arthur Charles Clarke (b 1917) was to become a leading science fiction writer, following a period of work in scientific research. Here, Arthur (top) is depicted with his mother, Mrs Nora Clarke (nee Willis), his sister Mary and his brothers Fred (left) and Michael. They are outdoors at Ballifants, the family farm in Somerset.
