Arthur C Clarke on a family picnic, c 1928. Clarke (b 1917) was to become a leading science fiction writer, following a period of work in scientific research. Here, he is about 11 years old. He is depicted having a picnic in the countryside with his family at Cothelstone, near Bishops Lydeard in Somerset. He is accompanied by his mother, Mrs Nora Clarke (nee Willis), his sister Mary, his brother Michael (aged 6 months) and his 'Auntie' Elsie. Somerset was Clarke's birthplace and childhood home.
