Description
The indenture is for William John Rawlings to be an apprentice for seven years at Carty and Son Limited of Harders Road, Peckham, Surrey. A boy would begin his working life at Cartys in a menial job, would progres to become a vatmaker's asistant and then perhaps be offered an apprenticeship. Until World War II the length of an indenture was seven years. Following the war the time was reduced to five years, although the actual length of the apprenticeship really depended on the progres of the individual.
