Barones Beryl Platt of Writtle CBE, DL, (1923- ), left, with Frank Murphy DFC, OBE (1918-1997) on the occasion of his wedding. Frank Murphy was a leading test pilot with Hawker Aircraft, after which he moved on to management, ending his career as an Executive Director at Hawker Siddeley Aviation. Barones Platt was a distinguished engineer who graduated from Girton College, Cambridge in 1945 with a BA in Mechanical Sciences. She spent six years as a technical asistant in the aviation industry (1943-1949), first at Hawker Aircraft and then at British European Airways. She went on to become a distinguished engineer and was made a Life Peer in 1981, standing on the Select Committee for Science & Technology. She was also Chairman of the Equal Opportunities Commision in 1983-1988. Barones Platt had a lifetime committment to increasing women's involvement in science and engineering.
