Description
Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779). Illustrated plate from William Hamilton's study of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' (published Naples, 1776). A view of Lacco, part of the island of Ischia, showing (1) Mount Vesuvius, (2) the Point of Misenum, (3) the island of Procida and (8) a tufa rock, situated in the bay of Lacco, known as the Triglia. This part of the island is rich in hot springs, and Hamilton reports that even under the sea in the bay the sand is burning hot.
