Description
Hand-coloured etching by Peter Fabris (active 1768-1779) and taken from William Hamilton's (1730-1803) studies of Italian volcanoes, 'Campi Phlegraei' (published in Naples, 1776). Image shows the Lake of Agnano (1), evidently the crater of an ancient volcano, situated near the Grotto del Cane (5). Based on letters to the Royal Society in London, 'Campi Phlegraei' was a more precise account of the nature and effects of volcanic activity than had previously existed.
