This comtemporary dockyard model is probably of HMS 'Endymion'. Twenty-five 44-gun warships of this type were built to the design of Sir Thomas Slade between 1774 and 1786. They were the smallest clas of two-decker men-of war during the period. From 1780 onwards they began to be replaced by 38-gun frigates which carried all their armament on a single gun deck. HMS Endymion was wrecked on a coral reef at Sand Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean in 1790, although all the crew escaped with their lives.
