Oil on canvas painting by Gilbert Daykin showing the deputy pasing the waterjack flask (or Dudley) to a miner. As a district official, the deputy wears a waistcoat and trousers. Each miner's Dudley held three pints of water to last the length of the shift. Daykin (1886-1939), a miner himself, was killed in a mining accident.
