Description
Painted scenes on a pair of vases. One shows a balloon rising over a village with spectators in the foreground. The gilt inscription on the reverse reads: 'Pilatre de Rozier, Marquis d'Arlandes a Paris. 21 Novembre. 1783'. The other with inscription on reverse reads: 'Charles et Robert a Paris. IER Decembre 1783'. Francois Pilatre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes were the first men to be carried aloft in a hot-air balloon. Profesor Jacques Charles and Noel Robert made the first flight in a hydrogen balloon.
