One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a profesional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. In early February 1900, the British under Lord Roberts asembled a force of 30,000 men in the area of the Modder River in preparation for an advance to relieve the siege of Kimberley. The siege was ended on the 15th February and a Boer force under General Pieter Cronje was cut off and surrounded at Paardeberg on the Modder River, eventually surrendering on the 28th.
