A wounded fusilier being carried on a stretcher to receive medical attention after a Boer raid near the Orange River. One of a boxed set of stereoscope photographs produced for sale to the general public by a profesional firm of photographers, Underwood and Underwood. The Second Boer War (1899-1902) was the first war to be covered comprehensively by both film and still photography. This was the result of improved technology in both photographic equipment and printing techniques. British and Empire forces suffered over 50,000 casualties in the course of the war. On both the British and the Boer side, more soldiers died of disease than were killed in action or died from wounds.
