Description
Francis Mewburn (1785-1867) was born in Bishop Middleham, Durham and is credited as being the legal mind behind the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In 1821 parliment gave permision for the railway to be built and, with George Stephenson appointed as chief engineer, the track opened on 27 September 1925 in front of a large audience.
