Description
Coloured aquatint engraved by John Harris after a drawing by S Kelper. The Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the world's first inter-city railway, was built under the guidance of chief engineer George Stephenson (1781-1848). A competition was held at Rainhill, near Liverpool (the Rainhill Trials) to determine the most efficient locomotive for haulage on the railway. The competition was won by 'Rocket', the locomotive engine designed and built by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859).
