Description
Engraving from Thomas Joseph Pettigrew's 'Biographical Memoirs of the Most Celebrated Physicians, Surgeons etc etc' (1840). Carlisle (1768-1840) is seen here resting his hand on a skull, with anatomical studies behind. He was the President of the Royal College of Surgeons and introduced the thin-bladed, straight-edged amputating knife.
