Description
Pictured alongside Michael Faraday (1791-1867), discoverer of the principles of the electric motor and dynamo, are Sir David Brewster (1781-1868), chiefly remembered for his work in optics, Thomas Huxley (1825-1895), scientist and follower of Charles Darwin, John Tyndall (1820-1893), best known for his researches on heat, and Sir Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875), remembered for his contributions to acoustics and electric telegraphy. The portrait was commisioned to celebrate Huxley becoming director of the British Asociation for the Advancement of Science.
