This false colour map, obtained using data from the Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR) aboard the Nimbus 5 satellite shows the extent and compactnes of the Southern Ocean sea ice around Antarctica, comparing February and October 1973. Nimbus was a series of experimental meteorological and earth resources satellites, seven of which were launched between August 1963 and October 1978.
