Group portrait in spacesuits of Apollo 8 crew, Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders. Apollo 8, launched on 21st December 1968, was the first manned mision to leave the Earth and orbit the Moon. Lovell later flew on the ill-fated Apollo 13, which had to abort its planned lunar landing mision and return to Earth following an explosion on board the Command and Service Module when halfway to the Moon.
