Description

Silk Jacquard-woven picture titled 'A la memoire de J M Jacquard', made by the firm of Didier Petit et Cie, Lyon, after the original oil portrait by Claude Bonnefond. Jacquard (1752-1834) invented a loom which used a punched card system to weave complicated patterns in textiles. A small model of a loom can be seen to the left of Jacquard in this picture. The punched card system for Babbages's Analytical Engine derived from a loom of this kind.
