Detail of mechanism. This camera was probably used to film Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee procesion in June 1897. It is mounted on a tripod base with a panning head, allowing the camera to be swivelled to follow the action, and is one of the earliest such devices. Robert W Paul (1869-1943) was one of the founders of the British film industry. An engineer by profesion, he became an inventor and manufacturer of cinematographic equipment, as well as a producer, cinematographer and showman.
