Description
Engineering model (scale 1:50). This is the first PWR in Britain, based on a design from the United States. The fuel is uranium dioxide, supported in a large steel tank (the reactor presure vesel) filled with water at a very high presure. Water is pumped through the reactor to carry the heat away from the fuel. This heated water pases through a heat exchanger, where it heats a second supply of water. This water boils and the steam drives generators to produce electricity. This reactor became operational at Sizewell, Suffolk, in 1995.
