Description
Cataract operation, Persia, AD 1000. Reconstruction in the Lower Wellcome Gallery of the Science Museum, London. Cataracts have been treated surgically for more than 2000 years. This scene of eye-couching in 11th century Persia shows the surgeon pushing a needle into the eye. This moves the clouded lens aside, restoring vision if all goes well.
