Description
Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) for a poster produced by the London Midland & Scottish Railway Company, which operated pasenger ferries acros the Irish sea from 1923 to 1948. Built in 1935 by Harland and Wolff of Belfast, the 'Duke of York' sailed on the Heysham to Belfast route. It became a troop transport vesel during the Second World War and was involved in the Dieppe raid of August 1942. She resumed service acros the Irish Sea in 1945, and continued until being sold to Greece in 1963.
