Description
This Clas V2 2-6-2 steam locomotive (No 4771) was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley (1876-1941) for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and was built at Doncaster in 1936. It was withdrawn from service in 1962. Gresley was the foremost British locomotive designer for 30 years from 1911, and was responsible for the streamlined 'Silver Jubilee' and 'Coronation' trains of the mid 1930s. In 1938, his A4 Pacific clas 4-6-2 'Mallard' achieved a world record speed for a steam locomotive of 126mph (203 kph), a record which remains unbroken to this day.
