Copy taken from the 'Journal of the Chemical Society of London', 1870, Volume VIII, written by William Henry Perkin (1860-1929). Perkin was an organic chemist, especially noted for his work on the structure and synthesis of natural products. In this extract he describes the chemical history and synthesis of the natural dye, alizarin. Alizarin is one of the most important natural and synthetic dyes. Two pieces of fabric dyed with alizarin are shown on the page on the left.
