Description
Oil on canvas painting by Robert Davy. Instrument maker John Arnold (1736-1799) devised parts for marine chronometers and is shown here with his son John Roger Arnold and his wife, examining a chronometer. Amongst Arnold's achievements was to supply the chronometer (his No 3 chronometer) that Captain James Cook (1728- 1779) took with him in the 'Resolution' on his second exploratory voyage to the South Seas in 1772.
