Description

Painting of a dogfight, with five fighter aircraft of World War I including centre, an RAF SE5 A 818 no. 6, another above, and two Fokker triplanes [not Red Baron livery], a third spiralling down in flames; country landscape below. By artist unknown [c1962]. Oil on canvas wrapped over blockboard, 92x122x2.5cm. (3x4ft).

Panel from Science Museum former Aeronautics gallery [c1962-1994] showcase display of Great War models. Possible commission by Drawing Office. Museum has on display an original SE5A (repainted from original livery) and model of Fokker triplane, which may have been sources for scene.
