Description
Detail. This is one of a pair of globes made by George Adams, instrument maker to the king. This is the dedication to King George III, 'the most generous and celebrated patron of astronomers'. The globe shows constellations in the southern hemisphere based on Nicolas Lacaille's (1713-1762) observations at the Cape of Good Hope from 1740-1744 and the entries in John Flamsteed's (1646-1719) stellar catalogue. The new constellations were named after scientific instruments so Adams could use his own instruments as models.
