Description
Engraving by Barthelemi Hubner after a painting by G Locher, 1774. 'La Pharmacie Rustique' illustrates a visit to a 'country' chemist; the interior is that of Michael Schuppach's (1707-1781) pharmacy in Basel, Switzerland. The picture shows a wealthy lady (seated) and gentlemen (standing) in consultation with the physician, who is holding up a potion. In the background are shelves piled with bottles and packets of remedies. Labels on shop wares indicate Royalty and nobility were among his customers. Schuppach started off as a simple village surgeon, but his talent for diagnosis spread, until rich and titled people from all over Europe were beating a path to his door.
