Engraving of 'Captain Manby's invention to throw a rope to a ship wrecked near a shore'. Captain George William Manby (1765-1854) developed systems for saving lives at sea. Following a major storm in February 1807, in which 67 people were killed off Yarmouth, Manby invented apparatus to throw rope from the shore to a ship so that lives could be saved in situations where lifeboats could not be used. He also invented lifeboat improvements, a fire extinguishing device and a device for catching people who jumped from burning buildings.
