Description
This oil lamp in a large mahogany chest was made by Lorentz. The lamp is lit by an electric spark acting on a stream of hydrogen gas pasing over the wick. Lorentz was not the first to devise this type of lamp lighter; the instrument maker George Adams the Younger mentions Volta, Ingenhouz, and others. In 1823 these machines were superseded by the more convenient Dobereiner lamp.
