Description
Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), showing Roman cavalrymen on horseback, with Hadrian's Wall, 'The Roman Wall', behind them. Dating from the 2nd century AD, Hadrian's Wall was built in Northumberland as a fortification by the Romans. It originally extended 73 miles from Bownes-on-Selway to Wallsend, and has since become the best known frontier of the Roman Empire. Artwork by W P Wollen.
